Wine Tasting, Scholar Athletes and Art
BEVERLY HILLS, CA – August 05, 2005, The National Alliance of African American Athletes brings the “WATKINS AWARD” to Los Angeles. To celebrate the return of the “WATKINS AWARD” we are having a Wine Tasting fundraiser at the elegant Karen Lynne Gallery. The Gallery is currently hosting the SEBA exhibit, Sophisticated Elegant Blacks in Art, which is a brand new genre of art. This vibrant, provocative, and incredibly innovative show offers a unique opportunity to view African Americans in contemporary settings on canvas. Each Stroke of the painter’ brush brings to life the beauty of a sophisticated, elegant, modern and upper class African-American.
The Wine Tasting fundraiser will he held on Friday, August 26, 2005 from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., admission is a seventy-five dollar donation. Admission is very limited so a reservation or pre-event ticket purchase is suggested. The Goals for Life Foundation-a mentoring program using retired NFL players (in cooperation with the LA Chapter of the NFL Players Association) and P.O.W.E.R.S. Women’s Network will serve as local host of the wine tasting event. Locals are working closely with the “Watkins Award” group and its planning committee; this should be a great kick-off event.
For the past fifteen years the National Alliance of African American Athletes has presented the premier award in the nation for Senior High School African-American Scholar Athletes. For the first time in ten years Los Angeles will host the “The Watkins Award” and SYNERGY Sports Conference on February 24th and 25th, 2006. Watkins Award Alumni include Darnell Dinkins, Ravens, Ronald Curry, Raiders, Robert Tate, Cardinals, Shane Battier, Memphis– NBA, Deryck Toles, Colts, Lorenzo Alexander, Panthers, Chris Lewis, Cardinals, La Var Arrington, Redskins, Grant Irons, Raiders, Nick Mattox, Panthers, and others. The Alliance “Athletes Advisory Board” includes John Salley – Radio/TV Host, NBA Champion and the new Chairman of the Athletes Advisory Board, Teyo Johnson, Raiders, Clyde Simmons, Eagles (Retired), Warren Moon, NFL (Retired) Chiefs, Oilers, Frank Thomas, White Sox, Mario Elie and Charlie Ward-NBA (retired) and others.
